2019 a fost un an tumultuos pentru Joe Swanberg. Serialul "Easy"/ Netflix, la care lucra cu grijă a fost anulat după 3 sezoane, și a și divorțat de soția lui, Kris Swanberg, partenerul cu care și lucra de mult timp (acum ea face filme sub Kris Rey). Din exterior, pare că el este într-un declin ca din cel mai întunecat timp din 2009-2010, când n-a regizat nimic. Dar în ciuda tuturor, Swanberg a finalizat un film fără ca toată lumea să știe. Este "Build the Wall." Acest film, cu gust ciudat, se apropie de audiențe care trăiesc în anul 2020.

Protagonistul său este un bărbat de vârstă mijlocie, numit Kent ("Uncle Kent" Kent Osborne), care trăieste o viață pașnică combinată cu o solitudine confortabilă în munții înverziti . Dar in a 50-a zi de naștere, prietenii lui Kev ("LOL" Kevin Bewersdorf) și Sarah ("All the Light in the Sky" Jane Adams) vin să-l viziteze. Sarah petrece un weekend plăcut cu Kent, în timp ce Kev începe să construiască un zid în curtea lui Kent pentru motive numai de el cunoscute. Vizita lor îi va schimba viața insingurată și odihnitoare. Swanbeg observă viața cotidiană a trei oameni dintr-o perspectivă placidă. Kevin și Sarah sunt pe pat, fac un duș, vorbesc la prânz și Kev construiește un zid în tacere. Aceste scene ale vieții cotidiene sunt adunate fără nicio pretenție.

Serialul anterior al regizorului "Easy" a fost apogeul carierei lui, în care toate abilitățile cultivate de Swanberg din ultimii 10 ani, au fost turnate în acest serial, și filmul prezintă "relația dintre oameni", în modul cel mai sofisticat,faptul că Build the wall, e un follow up al acestor combinații, e extrem de interesant, deoarece împărtășește aceeași textură cu filmele pe care le-a făcut Swanberg la începutul carierei: buget ultra-redus, angajați puțini, actori aka prietenii lui Swanberg, lumea minusculă cu o rază de 5 metri în jurul protagonistului. Acestea sunt toate elemente debutului lui "Kissing on the Mouth" sau "LOL", cât și producția la scară foarte mică a "Silver Bullets" și "Art History". Simt că Swanberg, care a purtat așa-numita mișcare Mumblecore pe spatele lui, a revenit, chiar dacă personajele tinere sunt inlocuite de cele de vârsta a doua.

Cu toate acestea, ceea ce vrea el să descrie rămâne la fel. Este "relația complicată dintre oameni". Kent și Jane sunt destul de apropiați și râd la aceleași glume porcoase și proaste. Să vorbim și despre actori. Kent Osborne, care-l joacă pe Kent, este vechi prieten cu Swanberg. El a fost impresionat de al doilea film (al lui) Swanberg, "LOL," și au format o prietenie care l-a făcut să joace rolul principal din manifestul Mumblecore, "Hannah Takes the Stairs,"apoi apare în "Uncle Kent" tot în rol principal, unul dintre cele mai minunate filme de Swanberg. El continua să apară cu regularitate în filmele lui, dar reapare în rolul principal pentru prima dată după ani de zile cu "Build the Wall." Și Jane Adams, actriță în rol secundar, faimoasă în Hollywood cu "Happiness," este o figură cheie care contribuie la creșterea popularitații lui. Când a regizat "Alexander the Last" cu Noah Baumbach producător, pentru prima dată, a folosit nu numai prieteni dar și actori profesioniști. Unul dintre ei a fost Adams. Se pare că relația dintre Kent și Jane devine aproape de una a iubiților,dar gălăgia pe care o face Kev îi trage pe cei doi intr-un teritoriu ciudat, care rezonează cu dezintegrarea graduală a initmitații lor.

În timp ce filmul este o comedie esențialmente, există ceva sinistru. Titlul "Build the Wall" vine de la acțiunea lui Kev, dar la ce te gândești când auzi aceste cuvinte? Primul meu gând este despre zidul pe care-l face Donald Trump la granița cu Mexic. În SUA de astăzi, zidul este fără îndoială o prezența dezgustătoare. Așa cum este construit în narativul său, filmul adună o complexă și subtilă amenințare, greu de pus in cuvinte.

 2019 has been a tumultuous year for Joe Swanberg. His Netflix drama "Easy," which he has been working on and nurturing, was canceled after season 3, and he was divorced his wife Kris Swanberg, his longtime partner (she's now making movies under Kris Rey) From the outside, it seems that he's been in a slump like his darkest time in 2009-2010 when he hasn't been able to make any movie. Sarah spends a pleasant weekend with Kent, while Kev starts building a wall in Kent's yard for some reason. Their visit will change his lonely, restful life. Swanberg glares into the daily lives of these three people in the mountains with a quiet observation. They lie in bed, take a shower, chat over lunch, and build a wall in silence. These everyday scenes are piled up without any pretense.

The director's previous drama series "Easy" was a culmination of his works, in which all of the skills Swanberg must have cultivated while making films for more than 10 years were poured into it, and it presented the "relationship between people" in the most refined form that he has been depicting throughout his career (I was disappointed that the decision to cancel "Easy" was made, which is so sad that I've abandoned watching it in the middle of season 3). The fact that "Build the Wall" is the follow-up to this compilation is extremely interesting, because it shares same texture with the work Swanberg made at the beginning of his career. Ultra-low budget, small cast, actors aka Swanberg's friends, a very small world within a five meter around the protagonist. These are all elements of his debut feature "Kissing on the Mouth" or "LOL", as well as the very small scale production of "Silver Bullets"and "Art History". For me, it feels like Swanberg, who carried the movement of mumblecore on his back, has returned. Even if the characters have changed from young to middle-aged.

Nevertheless, what he wants to depict remains the same. It is "the complex relationship between people". Kent and Jane are very close to each other, and they laugh at each other's silly dirty jokes. This friendship, however, sometimes approaches the sensuality of lovers. Their relationship drifts between friends and lovers, and Swanberg delicately captures the subtleties of their touch.

And in depicting these relationships, what impressed me was the way Swanberg openly depicted nudity and sex. At one point, Kent and Jane go to a nearby river and dive in the cold water, completely naked. Their bodies are plump and loose as are people at their age. If you're used to see the brawny, lithe beauties of Hollywood movies, you may be surprised by this reality-crushing nakedness. But Swanberg has always been suspicious of Hollywood's presentation of physical beauty and has never hesitated to present their bodies as they really are in his films. When he made his way into the majors, this direction was overshadowed, but as he became a middle-aged man himself gradually, he presented the nakedness of middle-aged men and women as they really are. His spirit is still alive and well.

Let's talk about the actors. Kent Osborne, who plays Kent, is a Swanberg's old friend. He was impressed by the second feature, "LOL," and formed a friendship with Swanberg, because of which he starred in Mumblecore's manifesto, "Hannah Takes the Stairs," and then he appeared in "Uncle Kent" as a leading role, one of Swanberg's very best films. He continued to appear regularly in Swanberg's films, but he returned to the lead role for the first time in years with "Build the Wall". Jane Adams, a famous supporting actor in Hollywood of "Happiness," is the key figure in Swanberg's rise to fame. He directed "Alexander the Last" with Noah Baumbach as producer, and for the first time, he used not only friends but also professional actors, and one of them was Adams. The two seems to hit it off on the set and Swanberg casted her for the lead role in "All the Light in the Sky", and then in "Easy."

In fact, the two had already worked together on "All the Light in the Sky". They have a one-night stand, and although they have very little time together, it was very impressive in terms of the insight into intimacy. Their relationship in "Build the Wall" and the chemistry between the actors is an extension of this. They seem to be laughing purely from the bottom of their hearts when they are chatting idly. This might be a prime example of improvisation that goes beyond scripted acting. You can see their dense chemistry in this friendly laughter. And their one night relationship in "All the Night in the Sky" is developping in an intimate, ambiguous manner.

On the other side, Kev's presence is somehow puzzling. While he shows his deep affection for Kent, he baffles him with the construction of a wall whose purpose is often obscured. And because he brings in friends from the outside to help him build it, Kent's circumstances have to change little by little. His presence gradually transforms into an uninvited guest for Kent. I mentioned earlier that "Build the Wall" is in the early spirit of Swanberg's films he made ten years ago, and part of that may be due to Kevin Bewersdorf, who plays Kev. He starred even in "Kissing on the Mouth," and he played one of the lead roles in his next film, "LOL". After a hiatus from working in Swanberg's films, he finally made a return. This is one of the reasons why I was deeply moved to see him again.

With Kev as a magnetic field, delicate tension emerges between the three people. The relationship between Kent and Jane seems to gets close to that of lovers, but the noise that Kev makes is dragging it into an awkward territory. And then Kent's happy loneliness is also broken by Kev, which also resonates with the gradual disintegration of their intimacy.

While the film is essentially a comedy, there is something ominous. The title "Build the Wall" comes from Kev's actions, but what do you think of when you hear those words? My first thought is of the wall that Donald Trump is building on the border with Mexico. In today's America, the wall is undeniably a disturbing presence. As it steadily is built in its narrative, this film acquires a complex and subtle threat that is hard to put into words.

"Build the Wall" is a return to the roots of his spirit for Joe Swanberg, one of the best filmmakers of our time. But he certainly has his sights set on the present: the year 2020. Most of the endings in Swanberg's films has ambiguous, lingering "life goes on" aftertaste, but this one has a strangely clear ending. If this means the result of the phrase "Build the Wall!", it's quite dark. What does Swanberg, who has been looking at the intimacy of America in 2000's and 2010's, see now? Perhaps he will dedicate the new 10 years to the pursuit for something sinister in "Build the Wall." I'm looking forward to it.

 主人公はケント("Uncle Kent" Kent Osborne)という中年男性だ。彼は緑深い山奥で、平穏なる孤独を享受する生活を送っていた。だが50歳を迎える誕生日、彼にとって親友であるケヴ("LOL" Kevin Bewersdorf)とサラ("All the Light in the Sky" Jane Adams)がやってくる。サラはケントとともに楽しい週末を過ごす一方で、ケヴはケントの家の庭に何故か壁を建設し始める。この来訪が彼の孤独で安らかな生活を変えていくことになる。

スワンバーグはそんな山奥で繰り広げられる三者三様の日常を静かな目線で以て観察していく。ベッドに寝転がる、シャワーを浴びる、昼ご飯を食べながらお喋りにかまける、黙々と壁を作っていく。そんな日常の風景の数々が、何の虚飾もなくありのまま積みあげられていくのだ。

監督にとっての前作"Easy"は正に集大成的な作品だった。10数年映画を製作してきて培ったのだろう技術の全てが注ぎこまれ、彼がキャリアを通じずっと描き続けている"人と人との関係性"というものを最も洗練された形で提示していた(私は"Easy"の打ち切り決定があまりにも悲しすぎて、シーズン3の途中から観るのを放棄してしまっている)

この集大成的な作品の次に、スワンバーグが制作したのがこの"Build the Wall"というのは頗る興味深い。何故なら今作からは彼のキャリア初期にこそあった感覚が濃厚に感じられるからだ。超低予算、少数精鋭、俳優陣は自分の友人、描くのは主人公の半径5mのあまりに狭い世界、そういった要素は例えばデビュー長編"Kissing on the Mouth"や"LOL"、そしてメジャーに進出する直前にごく小規模で作りあげた"Silver Bullets"や"Art History"の精神性に近い。私としては正にマンブルコアという時代をその背中に負っていたスワンバーグが帰ってきたという感慨がある。例え登場人物は若者から中高年に変わっているとしてもだ。

そうでありながら、やはりここでも彼の描きたいものは変わらない。それは"人と人の複雑な関係性"だ。ケントとジェーンはとても仲が良く、しょうもない下ネタで笑いあうような関係性だ。この友人関係は、しかし時おり恋人同士のような官能的なものに近づく時がある。彼らの関係性はいわゆる友達以上恋人未満を漂いながら進展していき、その微妙な手触りをスワンバーグは繊細に映しとっていくのだ。

そしてこういった関係性が描かれるうえで、私が感動したのはスワンバーグがあけすけに裸とセックスを描く態度だ。ある時、ケントとジェーンは近くの川に行き、全裸で冷や水に浸かることになる。彼らの身体は年相応にブヨブヨで締まりもクソもない。ハリウッド映画に登場する隆々でしなやかな美男美女の裸に見慣れてしまっていると、この現実をそのまま映しとったかのような裸には驚くかもしれない。だがスワンバーグは元来、そういったハリウッドが提示する身体美に疑義を抱き、作品において自分たちのありのままの身体を躊躇いなく提示してきたのだ。メジャー進出を果たすにあたってこの演出は影を潜めていったが、自身も中年男性になるにあたって、彼は中年男女のありのままの裸を提示する。彼の精神は未だ健在であったということだ。

ここで俳優たちについて紹介しよう。まず主人公のケント役Kent Osborne ケント・オズボーンは古くからのスワンバーグの友人である。彼は第2長編"LOL"に感動したのをきっかけにスワンバーグと友人関係を結び、マンブルコアのマニフェスト的な作品である「ハンナだけど、生きていく」に出演、そして2011年にはスワンバーグにとっての傑作の1本"Uncle Kent"に主演を果たした。その後も定期的にスワンバーグ作品に出演してきたが"Build the Wall"で久しぶりに主演へ返り咲くことになる。

そしてJane Adams ジェーン・アダムズは元々「ハピネス」などにも出演しているハリウッドの名脇役だが、スワンバーグが名声を得るきっかけとなった重要人物である。彼はノア・ボーンバックを製作に迎えて監督した"Alexander the Last"で初めて友人だけでなくプロの俳優も起用する訳だが、その1人として現れたのがAdamsである。この撮影現場で意気投合しスワンバーグは"All the Light in the Sky"で彼女を主演に起用、さらに"Easy"では作品の狂言回し的な役割として出演を果たしている。

実はこの2人は"All the Light in the Sky"で既に共演している。彼らは1夜の関係をともにするという関係性で、共演時間はとても少ないが、親密さについての洞察という意味ではとても印象深いものだった。"Build the Wall"での2人の関係性と俳優同士のケミストリーはこの延長戦上にあるものだ。彼らは他愛ないお喋りをしている時、心の底から笑っているように思われる。それは演技を越えた、アドリブゆえの素かもしれない。この親しみ深い笑いのなかに彼らの濃密な化学反応が見えてくる。そして1夜の関係性はもっと親密な関係となり、曖昧なままで少しずつ進展していくのだ。

この一方でケヴの存在はどこか不可解な印象を与える。彼はケントへの友情を露にする一方で、目的のよく見えない壁の建設でケントを困惑させることになる。さらに建設のために外部から友人たちを呼んでくるゆえに、ケントの置かれた環境は少しずつ変化せざるを得ない。そのうちに彼の存在はケントにとって招かれざる客なのではないか思われてくる。

先に"Build the Wall"には10年前のスワンバーグ作品の精神を感じさせると書いたが、その一端はケヴを演じるKevin Bewersdorfの存在にあるかもしれない。映画製作において彼はデビュー長編"Kissing on the Mouth"からの付き合いであり、次回作"LOL"では主演の1人を演じている。更に音楽や音響も担当しており、そういった意味でスワンバーグの初期作には欠かせなかった人物だ。2011年の"Uncle Kent"を最後にスワンバーグ作品に関わることはなくなっていたが、ここでとうとう再出演を果たしたのである。そうした流れもあり、彼の顔を久しぶりに観た時には深く感動させられた訳である。

そんなケヴを磁場として、三者の間には微妙な緊張感が立ち現れることになる。ケントとジェーンの関係性は恋人に肉薄するかと思いきや、ケヴが響かせる騒音の数々がそれをぎこちない領域へと引きずりこんでいく。そしてケントの幸せな孤独もまたケヴによって突き崩されていくのだ。それは親密さの緩やかな崩壊にも重なる。

今作は基本的にコメディ映画でありながら、何か不穏な雰囲気も存在する。そもそも"Build the Wall"という題名はケヴの行動が由来である訳だが、この言葉を聞いてあなたは何を思いうかべるだろう。私は真っ先にドナルド・トランプ大統領がメキシコとの国境に建てようとしている壁を想起した。今のアメリカにおいて壁とは否応なく不穏な存在である。それが着実に物語のなかに築かれていくことによって、今作は言葉にし難い複雑微妙な脅威を獲得していくことになるのだ。

"Build the Wall"はジョー・スワンバーグという現代最高の映画作家の1人がその精神の原点に立ち返った作品である。だが彼は確実に2020年という現在をも見据えている。スワンバーグ作品のラストは"人生は続く"という余韻を与える曖昧なものが殆どでありながら、本作は奇妙なまでにハッキリした結末を迎える。これが"壁を築け！"という言葉の結末ならば、なかなかに毒気のあるものだ。ゼロ年代、テン年代とアメリカにおける親密さを見据えてきたスワンバーグの目には今一体何が映っているのか？　おそらく彼は、この10年をその何かの探求に捧げるのだろう。私はそれを心待ちにしたい。
